TikTok 2023 timeline of events sorted out

TikTok has encountered a lot of things in 2023. This post follows a timeline to help you sort through specific events.

TikTok in February, 2023

On February 27, 2023, the Canadian government banned TikTok on gov’t devices to protect government information security. The White House set “deadline” for the U.S. federal government to remove TikTok in 30 days.

On February 28, 2023, the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee voted on a bill that would give U.S. President Joe Biden the authority to ban TikTok from all U.S. devices. However, the American Civil Liberties Union has taken a stand against the U.S. Congressional ban on TikTok.

In February 2023 local time, the head of the Lithuanian Ministry advised against TikTok.

Feb 2023 the European Parliament bans TikTok for employees over data privacy concerns. A move that highlights growing concerns at the European Union’s two top decision-making bodies about the Chinese short-video sharing app and who has access to its users’ data.

TikTok in March, 2023

BEIJING, March 7, 2023 (Xinhua) — Attorneys general from 45 U.S. states on Monday asked TikTok to provide subpoenaed materials requested by an ongoing national consumer protection investigation.

In March 2023, the Danish Ministry of Defense banned Ministry of Defense staff from using the Chinese app TikTok on official cell phones and other devices, according to an Associated Press report. The United Kingdom decided to ban TikTok on government cell phones, effective immediately.

In March 2023, Rafael Gonzalez-Montero, head of New Zealand’s Parliamentary Services, said that all devices accessing the New Zealand Parliamentary network would need to remove TikTok by the end of March 2023.

March 16. UK banned TikTok on office equipment due to security concerns. US, EU, and Canada took similar measures. TikTok claimed bans were politically motivated for fair competition.

The French government announced that it would ban government personnel from using TikTok on their phones. Due to data security concerns, on March 24.

The Swedish Defense Forces banned TikTok on work phones and tablets, according to AFP on March 27, 2023.

Mexico’s President Lopez said on March 27, 2023 that they won’t ban TikTok and will give it complete freedom.

April, 2023

Australia banned TikTok on government equipment on April 4, 2023. TikTok’s General Manager for Australia and New Zealand expressed disappointment, calling it politics-driven rather than fact-based.

On April 4, 2023, the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office fined Chinese short-form social media platform TikTok £12.7 million, claiming that TikTok violated data protection laws by using the personal data of children under the age of 13 without parental consent.

In April 2023, the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the largest Dutch political party under Prime Minister Mark Rutte, decided to stop using the TikTok app because of concerns that China could use it for surveillance, Dutch media outlet RTL News reported, citing a party lawmaker.

On April 14, 2023, US lawmakers in Montana voted 54 to 43 to ban the TikTok service in the state. The ban will take effect on January 1, 2024, if approved. TikTok, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, may take action to prevent the bill from becoming law.

May, 2023

According to Reuters, the U.S. state of Montana became the first U.S. state to ban TikTok, the overseas version of the short-video social media platform, Shakeology, when it signed a bill on May 17, 2023, banning it from operating in the state.

On May 22. TikTok filed a lawsuit in the Montana District Court, alleging that the ban announced by the state of Montana last week was “baseless” and violated the U.S. Constitution’s right to freedom of speech, and asking the court to stop the state from enforcing the ban.

June, 2023

TikTok COO Vanessa Pappas announced her departure in an internal letter on June 22nd.

August, 2023

On August 2 local time, Senegalese authorities blocked the social media app TikTok (the overseas version of Jitterbug), days after they dissolved their main opposition party, the Patriot Party (PASTEF), and detained its leader, Ousmane Sankoh. [107]

According to Reuters on August 16. New York City banned TikTok from government equipment, citing so-called “security concerns,” thus joining the list of U.S. cities and states that have imposed such restrictions on the social media app.

September 16, 2023 – European regulators have announced that TikTok has been fined €345 million (approximately Rs. 2.677 billion) for violating EU privacy laws regarding the processing of children’s personal data, according to Reuters.

TikTok in October, 2023

On October 4, 2023, TikTok Indonesia announced that it would be suspending its online shopping service (i.e., its small store business) in Indonesia to comply with new local regulations.

October 10. Vietnam’s 5-month investigation found TikTok violating e-commerce, information security, and child protection laws. The inspection team from six ministries reported violations in content sharing and e-commerce services.

On October 11. It was further reported that the Malaysian government was considering a policy similar to Indonesia’s, which contemplates banning e-commerce businesses on TikTok.

Additionally on October 12. A hearing was held in Montana on TikTok’s lawsuit against the state government for blocking its social software. The hearing lasted an hour. Judge Molloy heard arguments from TikTok and five content creators appealing the ban. Molloy questioned the state government’s actions and noted that residents use TikTok voluntarily. The court didn’t rule but will propose a solution soon.

November, 2023

Then, on November 13, the Nepalese government decided to ban the social media app TikTok at a cabinet meeting on the same day, calling it “disruptive to social harmony.” The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has issued a directive to the country’s internet service providers to stop the TikTok service.
